Frenchmen, Francophiles and mimes around the world will come together on Wednesday, July 14th to celebrate that most sacred of French holidays, Bastille Day. Check out how the Bishop Arts District & businesses such as Meddlesome Moth, Smoke, Park, and Bolsa are celebrating.
Now that phrases like “urban in-fill,†“in-town living,†and “walkability,†are the new urban-planning buzzwords, many are beginning to realize that Oak Cliff, especially North Oak Cliff, is so much more than its bad reputation. In addition to legendary killers, the more upstanding Stevie Ray Vaughn, Erykah Badu, Edie Brickell, Dennis Rodman, and T-Bone Walker also once called it home. And these days, there seems to be some sort of festival almost every weekend, whether it’s the Oak Cliff Art Crawl , the Oak Cliff Block Party Peace Festival, the Oak Cliff Mardi Gras, the Oak Cliff Earth Day Festival, or Cyclesomatic.

Bolsa’s in Oak Cliff will have its first ever Farmer’s Market this Sunday, April 5th from 1pm-4pm. After seeing Robert Kinner’s film Food, Inc. at AFI Dallas, I am going to start actively seeking out local food vendors and restaurants in Dallas. The movie explores our nation’s food supply and the “handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment.”
Bike Friendly Oak Cliff is a group of bicycle advocates promoting the creation of better cycling facilities in Oak Cliff. They are gaining quite a large following in a short period of time. The group has successfully raised money to install bike racks at popular hang outs in the Bishop Arts District.
Their next ride is planned for March 29th. They will be traveling to locations made historically significant by the infamous couple Bonnie and Clyde. I recommend coming out and enjoying a lovely spring day supporting this influential group.
Cliff Notes Prolonged Media is a new and independent bookstore in the Oak Cliff area. The 400 sq ft store is filled with character – selling literature from the Beatnik movement to more recent, self-published works by local authors.
Last month Cliff Notes had a successful, standing room only Open Mic night. This Friday night, the crowd will gather at Mighty Fine Arts for their second event – this month featuring local writer/poet, Josh Weir, and local band, Atrium.
I recently attended a media dinner for Zoli’s. Yes, that Zoli’s – the one that had to leave Oak Cliff because of gentrification. Their new spot in Addison is something to behold. You can catch my original commentary in this article: 7 pretty okay reasons you should go to Zoli’s Pizza at some point in the future (no pressure) .
Jay Jerrier, Zoli’s owner, liked the article enough to share on his own personal Facebook page. Oh course, you never know with him, he shares negative Yelp! reviews, only to mock the writer’s misguided discernment of pizza styles or desire for Ranch dressing.
Since ILiveInDallas.com sent me in their proxy to the media preview/tasting, I wanted to share the photographic love. Feast your eyes!
