UPDATED: 01/09/2015: Added Three Coffeeshops in Denton (Banter, Cultivar, and West Oak) and Serj Bookstore in Downtown Dallas. Comments and suggestions welcome as I plan to keep this list current!

Whether you need a place to caffeinate, a comfy seat for weekend reading, or a cozy corner for a casual conversation, nothing beats the experience of an independently owned coffeeshop.

I composed this list without reviews or additional information on purpose. That's because if you have the guts to open your own coffeeshop, you deserve recognition just for that alone.

In addition to supporting local business owners, you're also supporting local baristas by affording them the opportunity to train and work on non-automated equipment.

In many cases, local cafes will also serve specialty coffee which rewards your taste buds for the wise decision to ditch the green straw.

With that, I present to you the complete (and updated) list of independent coffee shops of DFW.

  1. I would also like to add Fourteen Eighteen Coffee House in Downtown Plano, 1418 K Ave (15th & K)

    1. Right on, that's a great spot! Great to see more activity around that whole block!

    2. Hey Baron,

      They've added per your suggestion.

      Thanks!

  2. Don't forget Buon Giorno in Fort Worth. My favorite espresso roast!

    1. I've heard that's where they hold the Fort Worth Open Coffee Club (#FWOCC) - I'll have to check it out some time: http://www.meetup.com/Fort-Worth-Open-Coffee-Club...

    2. Hey Chicbunny,

I added them per your suggestion.

      Thanks!

  3. Awesome coverage, Oren!

Added this whole post to my list: https://medium.com/@ChicagoGupta/dallas-coffee-sh...

    1. Only other one I would add is Union Coffee near SMU: http://uniondallas.net/

      1. Thanks Chirag!

I'm adding them per your suggestion.

        Cheers,
        Oren

  4. 1418 in Plano, zenzero in Coppell, trio in flower mound, coffee n cream in Frisco.

  5. Roots Coffeehouse

  6. I enjoy Black Forest Coffee on Northwest Hwy and the Generator Coffee House & Bakery in Garland. Please add these and the (many) others you have definitely left out. If you feel like it I mean, no pressure.

    1. Hi there,

Happily added both of these. Please let me know which of the many others you feel are left out. To my knowledge, this list is complete. It's suggestions from people like you that help fill in the gaps.

No one was intentionally snubbed, so please if you know of any more, do let me know.

      Thanks!
      Oren

      1. Houndstooth Coffee at Knox/Henderson (1900 N Henderson Ave, Dallas, TX 75206)

  7. I just shared this on my FB fan page https://www.facebook.com/Stefsgastronomy

  8. Let's add Cafe Silva to the list. This little gem is located at the SW corner of Royal and Grenville in Lake Highlands. It's hidden in a genetic strip center overlooking the bike trails on Harry Moss Park and the Royal Oaks Country Club golf course. The coffee is rich, smooth and distinctively Latin-American. The proprietor is a delightful fellow whose wife serves up some of the tastiest treats in town. There's also free wifi but, what will keep you coming back is the coffee and hospitality!

  9. Great list but also proof that people think "south" only as far The Cedars. White @RhinoCoffee is an unexpected treat in Cedar Hill.

    1. Hi Get Rich,

Thanks for your suggestion! White Rhino Coffee has been added to the list.

  10. There's also many many more good shops in Denton. I've collected these (and some other favorites already here) on this Foursquare list: https://foursquare.com/eswayne/list/the-best-coff...

    1. Hey Eric,

I'm adding the Denton shops on your list.

Any others we're missing on this list?

  11. Zenzero bro

    1. Thank you Noe,

Zenzero has been added to the list.

  12. Anyone interested in starting their own coffee shop I have a new building planned an approved specifically for a 2 story coffee shop with roof deck for sale in downtown Frisco! Call me if you want more info. Matt Calloway 214-995-9091 http://www.loopnet.com/lid/18666069

    1. Hey Matt, when this gets opened as a coffee shop, please make sure to come back to this post and let me know.

Unless it's a chain or Starbucks, then it won't make the list :P

  13. Also, Caffe Promenade in Allen. http://www.caffepromenade.com/

    1. Thanks Lisa, Caffe Promenade has been added to the list!

  14. Great list! I tend to disagree with the definition of Lakewood- to me it's only to the South and West of White Rock. I would consider Cultivar to be "East Dallas."

    1. Thanks for your suggestion Megan, the list has been updated accordingly.

Sorry that my gerrymandering was initially inaccurate.

Any additional zoning (or otherwise) suggestions welcome!

  15. I love Frogg in Allen!!! Highly recommend And great creapes too!

    1. Mmmm crepes

  16. Method opened recently at Ross Ave. & Hall Street. I guess that's downtown or Old East Dallas.

    1. I updated their location per your recommendation. Thanks Jaime!

  17. The original Roots is in North Richland Hills, across from TCC. Don't miss this one!!

I need to do a coffee tour of DFW.

  18. White Rhino Coffee in Cedar Hill is a great spot for the South Dallas crowd.

  19. I added Cafe Silva! Thanks Ryan!

  20. Wild Detectives in Bishop Arts!

  21. Holy moly! You left out my favorite coffee house in Rockwall, the Life House! They serve all organic locally grown food goodness to go with their fair trade beans they roast themselves!

  22. Oren, can you start a coffee tour? That would be awesome!

  23. LOVE this list! I just moved back to Texas from Perth, Australia - where they do coffee well. This list is just in time: May I suggest The Life House in Rockwall, TX to add to the list? http://www.thelifehousetx.com I'm not an employee or anything...Just really appreciate a good, independent cafe.

  25. Time to add Houndstooth Coffee, 1900 N Henderson Ave, Dallas, TX 75206

    1. Thanks @Korbel Dev. They've been on my radar since December, but I didn't want to list an unopened space.

Congratulations to Houndstooth on their opening yesterday! You're the closest cafe to my house, so I'll be seeing you often.

  26. You left out Irving from your list! There may be others, but here's one to start with:

    Java Me Up
    401 Cimarron Trail
    Irving, TX 75063 http://javameup.com/

  27. My favorite coffee shop is located in North Garland - Firewheel Coffee, off the GB Tpke.

  28. Banter in Denton Tx is the current home of coworking space TechMill.

  29. There's a new shop in Denton called West Oak Coffee Bar and Cultivar opened one in Denton also.

    1. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Post is now updated.

  30. Please add Wild Detectives in Oak Cliff (Bishop Arts), and Serj Coffee & Books in Downtown. I know they probably list as "bookstores", but they have great coffee as well.

  33. I think one of the more romantic cities to visit is Italy. I personally went there on my honeymoon and my husband and I loved the food and the people there! I would strongly suggest Rome and Florence. Although it can get very touristy, especially in the summer, they are very beautiful places with so much history and culture. To break free from the tourist crowd, I would suggest you to try some home-dining options. We went to dine with one of the local hosts on BonAppetour, and were treated to a fancy meal at their homes on the rooftop! It is very simple to book a dinner with the hosts on their website too! Other than that, I would also suggest you to try taking one of those Vespa tours, especially in the Florence country-side. Riding on the vespa with your partner across the green landscape is actually very thrilling and romantic! Hope this helped! Please visit my website Low cost hotel Florence
