It’s not very often I see pieces that make me forget about my surroundings and zero in on every detail of the solid, still movement in front of me. It’s nearly (if not completely) impossible to duplicate the reaction I get when I’m not in the presence of art that moves me, but I will try: My feelings become obsolete and I become aware of my breathing. Anxiety is now a forgotten language. I am saddened by beauty and vision that I believe would be seen by the artist before the canvas is possessed with brush strokes. Life is suddenly serious and very real …. but I am unaware of all these feelings because right now I am only breathing and rapidly moving my eyes to cover every perimeter of what is directly in front of me. This is what art does for me; it’s nearly (if not completely) impossible for me to describe (and I am a little embarrassed I even tried.)

Have you ever wondered why an artist looks at the world in a certain way? What drives them to create a particular work?

VISION is a new gallery experience hanging at the Mokah Art Gallery in Deep Ellum. The show is curated by ArtLoveMagic’s founder Michael Lagocki and includes over 20 local artists. Hanging next to each piece in the show is an artists’ statement, describing why they chose their themes and why they created the work. Together, these works, these themes, create a full Vision.

Mokah Art Gallery and ArtLoveMagic invite you to experience a show that lets you do more than just look, it lets you connect, understand, and look through another’s eyes. The evening also includes open mic for musicians and spoken word.

The VISION show is currently open during Mokah’s normal operating hours.

Mokah Coffee House is a BYOB establishment - limit to 1 six pack or 1 bottle of wine and a $5 cork fee does apply for most shows. For more information, call 214-651-0633.

Jodorowsky’s psychedelic 1973 follow-up to his seminal EL TOPO is a mind-blowing, almost indescribable mix of fantasy, religious symbolism, horror and humor. Detailing the surreal adventures of a thief and his encounter with a mystical guide in a quest for immortality.

La Montaña Sagrada (The Holy Mountain, reissued as The Sacred Mountain) is a 1973 cult film directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky who also participated as actor, composer, set designer, and costume designer. The film was produced by Beatles manager Allen Klein of ABKCO after Jodorowsky scored an underground phenomenon with El Topo and the acclaim of both John Lennon and George Harrison (John and Yoko Ono put up production money). It was shown at various international film festivals in 1973 and limited screenings in New York and San Francisco. However the film was never given wide release until 2007, when a restored print toured the United States, screening with El Topo, and released in DVD format from May 1st.
