Early voting for the 2008 Presidential Race ends Friday, October 31st. Voters should bring with them their voter registration cards, OR another form of ID (i.e. drivers license issued in the state of Texas, birth certificate, US Passport.)

SOS makes it really easy for voters to find polling places in every (and I mean every) county - https://team1.sos.state.tx.us/voterws/viw/faces/SearchSelectionPolling.jsp.

This will be my first year to vote for a presidential election, however, it will not be my first time to vote. The first time was in 2003 during Governor Gray Davis‘ recall election. The controversial laws he passed at the end of his tenure was enough for me to register with the state of California and vote him out of office. It was the first time I saw the power of politicians and what they can do at the interest of themselves and not the people. Ultimately it was the power of people working together to take back their state and put it in the hands of someone who actually gives a damn about them.

I know that this election is significant - not just because of the candidates on the ballots - but because people are going to come out in record numbers to vote. And that to me is significant.

Recently I posted about the November 8th Festival of Ideas hosted by The Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture. It wasn’t long after that post I was contacted by DIHC and invited to a recent event with Au Courant, Dallas Institute’s newest membership group. Originally inspired by The Insitute’s vision, Au Courant heightened my inspiration & enthusiasm for the non-profit by bringing together Dallas’ young creative up-and-coming leaders with Dallas’ prominent and established leaders.

The event was a private screening of Manny Mendoza and Mark Birnbaum’s “Stop The Presses: The American Newspaper in Peril” at Angelika Film Center (stay tuned for a later post about this film.) The screening was followed by an open discussion with the two Filmmakers and members of the audience. It was a personal setting and a fascinating topic to discuss; one that I hadn’t yet seen discussed amongst my peers and one that will not go unrecognized in future conversations, thanks to the documentary and that evening.

The event was open to members and non-members and admission was more than reasonably priced at $15. This was the last event of the year for the Au Courant, however there are events going on with Dallas Institute through the remainder of this year. Now that I’ve signed up for their newsletter I’ll be sure to post the Au Courant events before they happen!

If you’re interested in membership with The Dallas Institute or Au Courant, contact Lauren E. Loggins or register online. Au Courant is offered to DIHC members at no additional cost.

This is a great opportunity to get rid of old equipment in the house or at the office. Throwing these items away is very harmful to our environment. Recycling these products reduces the need to mine the earth for raw materials, such as precious metals, glass, and plastics. When left in a landfill they can leak out mercury, lead, arsenic, and other hazardous materials. Tell your friends and family!

Wednesday, October 15th at 7pm - One night; two great histories. One foreseen and another in the making.

Richard Stolley, former editor of Life magazine, takes us back to November 22nd, 1963, when he learned about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and how he secured publication rights to the Abraham Zapruder film of that tragic event. The program also features TV, radio and oral history clips from the Museum collection.

Stay after the program and watch the final presidential debate on the Museum’s big screen.

The event is free and open to the public. For seating reservations, call 214-747-6660, ext. 6625, or e-mail programs@jfk.org.

The Dallas Women’s Foundation has spent the last 20+ years funding community programs that support women and girls. DWF raises money and provides grants to small, grassroots organizations committed to “create long-term, positive change.” The Foundation has funded research studies and found that women and girls in Dallas were in need of programs and funding in literacy, poverty, education, employment, health, crime, and violence.

There are many ways you can get involved with the Foundation - serve on a committee, enlist the support of your company, donate to DWF, and support by attending DWF events!

THE DEBATES THAT WE AS AMERICANS HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY OF PAYING ATTENTION TO

Watch the last three debates at Angelika Film Center in Dallas, TX. Bring your friends or just come alone. You’ll probably see me in the middle of the theater with a beer and a blackberry. Also, admission is free. No excuses. The debates will start at 8pm, but grab your seats at 7pm (I have this feeling that a lot of people will be tuning in.)

The schedule is as follows (without any delays, I hope.)

October 2 - Vice Presidential Debate - Sen. Joe Biden from Delaware and Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska
October 7 - Second Presidential Debate - Sen. John McCain from Arizona and Sen. Barack Obama from Illinois
October 15 - Third Presidential Debate - Sen. John McCain from Arizona and Sen. Barack Obama from Illinois

The Obama Dallas Campaign has reserved a theater for all three debates. For the October 7th and 15th debate, a non-partisan theater will be open for watching the Presidential debates.

We are living in a period of economical & international distress, and I hope we as Americans can look and vote for a candidate who will administer leadership and change in Washington.

Dr. Wagner is a nationally known speaker and scholar in women’s history. She was one of the first women in the US to receive a doctorate for her work in women’s studies at CSU Sacramento. Today she is the Executive Director of the Gage Foundation in Fayetteville, New York and has been interviewed on several shows such as All Things Considered and Democracy Now. Wagner also has appeared on Ken Burns’ “Not For Ourselves Alone: The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony” and as a historian on the PBS special “One Woman, One Vote.”
